When is the best time to prune
trees?
When the tree
is small! Weak branches or those that intersect main branches
should be pruned out. An open "layered" structure sets the
future direction of the tree's branching. Also, the smaller the
cut, the faster the recovery.
Seasonally,
ideal pruning times vary. Flowering evergreen shrubs should be
pruned after flowering, or annually in late summer. Evergreens,
like Pines and Spruces should be pruned in late winter after
the threat of deep cold is past. It is best to prune fruit and
flowering trees, and any deciduous tree (one that sheds all of
its leaves) in the winter. The greatest advantage to winter
pruning is that the air is free of decay causing bacteria,
insuring a sanitary cut.
